For building uppers we highly recommend using a rod type tool (reaction rod) which engages the barrel extension lugs. These type of tools are used here, at BCM, for assembly and take assembly forces off of the upper. These are available from a number of companies including Midwest industries, Geissele, and Wheeler engineering.
